CBS News recently reported on a 21-year-old woman who is speaking out boldly about cancer in her country. The Japanese woman was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer at such a tender age. This is the time you would expect a young adult to be finishing college and ready to start on the most productive bit of her life. That, however, was not the case as cancer has changed her life.

What is a thyroid gland?
The thyroid gland is an organ shaped like a butterfly that is found in front of the neck. In some people, the ductless gland is elongated and enlarged while it is almost invisible in others. It is commonly referred to as the Adams apple. The gland secretes hormones that are vital for metabolism processes, weight control, energy usage in the body, and sleep patterns. Owing to the location of the gland, many people do not even realize that exists. Perhaps this is the reason why the organ does not receive the due attention that it requires.
